Fireworks

But everything that burns too brightly dies too soon, fades too soon.

In the deep, burning night

Lies the scent of a fire—

A fire that ignites the soul

And sends a blazing trail

Of inexplicable joy

Through our bodies and hearts.

Watch the first spark

As it catches fire,

And as it clings to the threads.

Hold my hand

As we wait with gripping anticipation,

Goofy smiles and cheeky grins

Filling our childish faces,

Like the fireworks

Are the greatest things

We've ever seen.

It flashes back—

The first time we met,

Just like a spark that lit the fuse.

You and I shared the same feelings,

The same awkward smiles and laughter

But deep inside we both know

That something has been tripped,

A trigger has been pulled

In the workings of our hearts.

We let out a muted scream

While we watch the firework zoom

Up the dark, lonely sky.

Stars burst from it,

Reflecting off our own

Star-filled eyes.

Our heartbeats beating in unison,

Moving in sync

With the movements we have

Within the darkness that shrouds us.

The speed of our fall

Was just as fast.

We zoomed into each other,

Two entities bound to crash

Head-first, heart-first.

We burned like the bright flash of a match,

An intense, heavy burn

That lights a fire too great,

Something that dies too soon.

We wait for each other

With expectant anticipation,

A cautious dance of two people

Learning to dance for the first time.

You stepped on my feet

And I stepped on yours,

Yet through the awkward steps

We found ourselves giggling

As we caught each other

When we trip and fall.

The sky lit up,

A vast array of multiple colored lights,

As the firework explodes

And expands up to fill the sky,

Just as how it fills our hearts

And paints a canvas of colors

And dreams within them.

It was the peak of our time,

The most vigorous moment of our youth

When you and I shared

The moment we could never forget

Under the dazzling lights

Of the chaotic beauty

Of the fireworks above us.

The beauty you and I shared,

Sparked the distance between our hearts,

And invited us to dance

A defiant dance

Under the watchful gaze

Of the eyes cloaked in the dark.

But everything that burns too brightly,

Dies too soon, fades too soon.

And so, just as we were the spark

And the speed of the launch,

And the explosion of a thousand different colors,

We are also the fading sparks

Dancing in the smoke,

The wake of what used to be

And what can no longer

Come to reality.

And just as quickly

As the light lit up the face

That I knew and loved for so long,

So did the dark hid it

And took it away from my view.

Along with my loss of you

Was the loss of my heart.

And as I stand alone in the dark,

My eyes and heart

Longing to see the fireworks

Sparking in and out of existence,

I will long to see you,

I will long to dance with you again.

Nevertheless, I will wait

For the time and the person

Destined for me.

But I know, deep within me

That the light our eyes had seen,

And the light our hearts had felt, Will remain like an afterglow, A haunting halo  That wraps around  My memory of you.
